About the Wildlife Clubs of Uganda

Background
WCU was established in 1975 by Mr. John Ken Lukyamuzi, Dr. Eric Edroma and Mr. Ponsiano Semwezi to ensure that Ugandan youth are taught the values of protecting wildlife, so that when they grow up they would make decisions benefiting nature and people alike. WCU was started to provide the Ugandan youth with conservation education and opportunities for participation in conservation actions.

Mission
Our mission is to educate the population so as to ensure the sustainable use of Uganda’s natural resources and to conserve the country’s wildlife heritage for the present and future generations.

Goals and Objectives
The main conservation objective of the Wildlife Clubs of Uganda is to provide conservation education and communication for sustainable development. The purpose of the organization is to educate the population so as to ensure the sustainable use of Uganda’s natural resources and to conserve the country’s wildlife heritage for the present and future generations The Wildlife Clubs of Uganda aims to;

• Cultivate a desire for wildlife conservation among the people of Uganda.
• Promote the appreciation and scientific study of the country’s wildlife and the environment.
• Promote the realization of the economic, recreational, cultural and aesthetic values of the country’s natural resources.
• Promote co-operation with other organizations with similar objectives within and outside of Uganda.

 

Membership:
WCU is a membership society and its members range from school clubs to individuals, families, private sector organisations and community groups. There are five recognised categories of membership of WCU: Primary School Clubs, Secondary School Clubs, Tertiary Education Institutions, Associate Membership, Family Membership and Corporate Membership.

Currently, WCU has over 1,500-member clubs countrywide with a membership of over 60,000 individual members. In some areas the clubs have organized themselves into District Wildlife Associations. The members of WCU work voluntarily wherever they are and collaborate with other self-help development groups.

In order to become a member of WCU, a club, individual or organisation registers with the National Secretariat. Members will be entitled to two kinds of benefits. “Core benefits” are for every one that joins and registers for the Wildlife Clubs of Uganda and “Outstanding Member benefits” that will only be received by clubs whose programs really stand out.
